Gujia is a popular sweet made in Uttar Pradesh on Holi. It’s a fabulous sweet except that it’s a lot of work. A friend of mine showed me an easy version which tastes as good as the original version if not better and it’s made of Puff Pastry dough. So here is the recipe for Puff Pastry Gujia.
Preparation Time: | 60 minutes |
Servings: | 9 Pieces |
Difficulty: | Easy |
Ingredients
Puff Pastry Sheet | 1 (about 10 inch by 10 inch) |
Khoya (solidified milk) | 1/2 cup |
Finely grated dry coconut | 1/4 cup |
Powdered Sugar | 1 cup |
Small cardamom (choti elaichi) | 1 |
Kishmish (raisins) | 1/2 cup |
Method
- Thaw the puff pastry sheet and cut it in 3 inch squares.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a large pan, saute the khoya on medium heat.
- Once it starts leaving ghee, turn off the heat.
- Cool off the khoya. Once it’s cold, add sugar, coconut powder and elaichi powder. Mix well so that there are no lumps.
- Now add raisins to it and combine. Keep aside.
- Take one square in one hand and place a spoon of filling on top of it.
- Fold it in half to form a triangle carefully and seal the open sides. Make sure that the filling does not come out.
- Cut off the sides using a pastry cutter to make the edges look nice. Repeat with other pieces and lay them on a baking tray.
- Bake the gujias for about 15 to 20 minutes till they become golden brown. Puff Pastry Gujias are ready.
- Remove from the oven and cool it a bit. Serve Puff Pastry Gujia warm for best taste.
Peel the elaichi/cardamom and grind the seeds. Keep aside.
Notes
- You can fill this before hand and bake it just before serving.
- Make sure that the coconut is not stale because that spoils the whole gujia.
- These gujias do not store well. No matter how you heat the stored gujia, it does not taste that great. So make only as much as can be consumed fresh.
